TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Calling all Playwrights! In a region filled with many
talented writers, the first annual Young Playwright’s Festival, offers a great
opportunity for the creative writers in the region to get involved and be rewarded!
Six one act plays, written by area youth, performed by Traverse City area performers
and directed by local directors in affiliation with Old Town Playhouse will come
alive at the City Opera House, Sunday, May 20th. These talented finalists have been
selected from a juried competition of over 30 entrants. Each finalist will receive a
$100 award and a staged production of their play at the City Opera House. The 1:30
PM performance is free and open to the public.

The Young Playwrights Festival is collaboration between MSU Federal Credit Union
Institute for Arts & Creativity at Wharton Center, City Opera House, Old Town
Playhouse and National Writers Series.  High school students write and submit
one-act scripts to a juried competition in November. Six final scripts are selected
to be produced and performed at City Opera House by local actors and directors.
Finalists, whose plays will be produced, are paired with a theatre mentor, located
locally or out-of-state, from a professional theatre or organization.  For a period
of about four to five weeks, the mentor and student playwright work on the play.
The goal is to teach the students more about the art of playwrighting. The revised
play is then submitted to the directors for production.  Finally, during the
performance weekend, mentors will come to Traverse City and see the play with their
students. Time will be provided for them to meet, talk and reflect.

Professional mentors include:  Melissa Cooper, New York based playwright; Michael
Haney, Associate Director Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park; Bert Goldstein, Director
of MSU FCU Institute for Arts & Creativity; and Randy Wyatt, Michigan-based
playwright and theatre instructor at Aquinas College.

Congratulations to the City Opera House 2012 Young Playwright finalists:

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. ― Swing your way towards the New Year on Wednesday, December, 28th at 7:30 pm! Cole and his quintet swing into town bringing warmth, wit, and humor to the City Opera House.  The perfect night out sandwiched between the holidays!

Internationally renowned acoustic guitar virtuoso, George Cole, will treat the audience to selections from “The Great American Cole Book”. The George Cole Quintet presents an elegant evening of outstanding musicianship, style, and a glimpse into an alternate universe where melody, harmony and great showmanship reign supreme. Their style is pure “Eurocana” – meaning that inspiration is drawn from the string-driven swing created by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli as well as America’s greatest composers. The Quintet’s music is sprinkled with red hot violin and Cole’s “Speed of Light” guitar technique.

George Cole continues his mission to write a new chapter of the Great American Songbook with the help of the San Francisco Bay Area’s top musicians. The band’s current CD, Riverside Drive, is currently in heavy rotation on radio stations across America and their show is not to be missed. You’ll see the stylish retro presence of George Cole on guitar/vocals, stunning showstopper Hale Baskin on vocals, Berkelee trained violin virtuoso Nancy Kuo, propulsive rhythm guitarist Jimmy Grant, and swinging upright bassist Christopher Bastian.

“Think of the evergreen songs of George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin heated to a Django Reinhardt swing, and you’ve got the infectious gist of the music of George Cole.”  - Lawrence B. Johnson, Detroit News

Featured Musicians: George Cole (guitar and vocals), Hale Baskin (vocals), Nancy Kuo (violin), Jimmy Grant (rhythm guitar), Christopher Bastian (bass).

City Opera House presents Nellie McKay

Nellie McKay

November 20, 2011
City Opera House

Throughout her career, Nellie McKay has defied categorization, appearing everywhere from Broadway to NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion. The quirky and endearing singer-songwriter is described by The New York Times as a “vocal chameleon.” McKay puts her varied musical palette to good use with songs that are part cabaret and part sparkly pop, but just beneath the charming melodic surface is a wit and a sharply tuned social conscience. “Thanks to McKay, the Great American Songbook has a living, breathing present as well as a glorious past.” – The Boston Globe
